Plastering and gyprocking services in Newcastle

Newcastle Gyprocker Heroes supply and install plasterboard across Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, Maitland and the Hunter Valley, Port Stephens and the Central Coast. New home sheeting from the plans is the largest part of the work, and the rest is renovations and repairs to walls and ceilings in houses people are living in while we are in them. We supply the board, the cornice, the compounds and the fixings, we sheet, set and sand, and we leave every job ready for your painter. Licensed and insured, and a quote costs nothing anywhere in the coverage area.

Our services

What we sheet, set and repair

The services below split into two halves. New homes, renovations, patios, bulkheads, suspended ceilings and the fire rated and acoustic linings are work on a building that is going up or coming apart, and they are quoted from plans or from a specification. Wall repairs, sagging ceilings, cornice and water damage are faults in a finished house, and those are quoted from a photograph, usually over the phone. Pick whichever describes your job and the page will tell you what decides the price.

Frequently asked questions

What people ask before they call a plasterer

How much should I pay a plasterer in Newcastle?

Most plastering is quoted per job rather than at an hourly rate, because the same room can be a day or a week depending on what is behind the lining. Newcastle Gyprocker Heroes publish three figures: new home plasterboard supply and install from $38 per square metre, a small hole repair from $100, and bulkhead lining from $550 for a 3m by 1m bulkhead. Everything else is priced from photographs or from your plans.

Do plasterers do ceilings or walls first?

Ceilings go up first, and then the walls are sheeted up underneath them. Doing it in that order lets the top edge of each wall sheet push up against the ceiling and hold it, so the ceiling is supported along every wall line rather than relying on its fixings alone. It also puts the wall to ceiling junction where the cornice will cover it. A plasterer who sheets walls first has made the ceiling harder to hang and the cornice line harder to keep straight.

What is the difference between plastering and gyprocking?

Gyprocking is hanging sheets of plasterboard on a frame and then setting the joints, and it is what almost every Australian house built since the 1960s has inside it. Traditional plastering means trowelling a wet coat onto masonry or onto lath. Newcastle Gyprocker Heroes do the first of those two. Gyprock is a CSR brand name that has become the everyday word for the board, in the same way people say Esky rather than cooler.

How can you tell a good plasterer?

Look along a finished wall with light raking across it rather than standing square to it, because a flat wall and a wall that only looks flat are indistinguishable from straight on. Ask which level of finish is being quoted, since Level 3 and Level 5 are different amounts of work and different prices for the same room. Ask whether the board grade suits the framing centres. A plasterer who has an answer to those three has read the manufacturer's instructions rather than working from habit.

Do you take on small jobs?

Yes. A single hole, one cracked cornice run or one room is a job in its own right with Newcastle Gyprocker Heroes, and there is no minimum of a whole house. Small hole repairs start at $100 and are usually priced over the phone from a photograph, so you get a figure without waiting on a site visit first. Send one photograph of the damage and one of the whole wall from a few metres back.

How long does a room take to sheet and set?

Sheeting a room is quick and setting it is not, because the joints have to be coated more than once and each coat has to dry before the next one goes on. That means most jobs are several visits over several days rather than one long day, and cold or damp weather stretches it. Newcastle Gyprocker Heroes tell you the visits at quote stage rather than at the end, so you can plan the painter around them.
