Plastering and Gyprocking in Edgeworth
Edgeworth has had three names and kept the last one only since 1960. It sits at the western edge of the built up part of the lake. There is bushland on one side and a colliery from 1890 underneath it. Nine in ten homes here are freestanding houses. We sheet, set and repair plasterboard across the suburb. Almost everything we do here is a whole room or a whole ceiling rather than a shared wall.
Common plasterboard problems in Edgeworth
This is the most uniformly detached suburb in its own postcode, and it sits on the boundary between the suburbs and the bush. Both of those change the work. What follows is the short list, in the order we meet it.
The creek this suburb was named after is on the council flood map
Edgeworth was Cocked Hat Creek before it was anything else, and Cocked Hat Creek is one of the six main tributaries feeding Cockle Creek. That system drains about 109 square kilometres into the northern end of the lake. Council's Winding Creek and Lower Cockle Creek flood study covers part of this suburb by name. Water that comes up a creek reaches a wall from the bottom and wicks upward through the sheet. Where that has happened, the board comes off to a framing line rather than being dried out in place.
On the bush side of Edgeworth the eaves are a specification, not a choice
The suburb runs out to bushland toward West Wallsend and the Sugarloaf. Lake Macquarie's bush fire prone land map was recertified on 16 September 2025. Where a property is mapped, AS 3959 sets what the external linings have to be, and that includes the eaves and soffits. Your Section 10.7 planning certificate is what says whether yours is on the map. Worth knowing before you plan the outside of the job, because external lining is work we send elsewhere rather than take on.
Almost nothing here shares a wall, so the jobs are whole ceilings
Close to nine in ten dwellings in Edgeworth are separate houses, and only about one in twenty is attached. That is a different mix to the suburb next door. In practice that means the work arrives as whole rooms and whole ceilings rather than as one wall between two homes. A ceiling taken down and resheeted is a different order of job to a patch. The room has to be cleared and the access is through the ceiling rather than around it. Batten spacing decides the board before anything is ordered.
The oldest streets are a colliery village and they were not built square
The Young Wallsend Coal Company opened its colliery here in 1890, and the housing that went up around it is the oldest in the suburb. Rooms in that core are smaller, ceilings are lower and little of it is plumb or square by modern standards. Walls have usually been lined over at least once already. A sheet cut to a measured rectangle will not fit a room like that. It gets set out off the worst wall rather than off the plan.
Nothing in the paperwork here stops an internal job
There is no heritage conservation area anywhere in this postcode and no heritage area plan covering it. Most homes here carry no heritage controls at all. Subsidence approval is a common worry and it does not apply either. Internal alterations to a steel or timber framed house sit on the exempt list across every surface development guideline. That covers ceilings and internal partitions. So the ground history here changes how we read a crack, and it does not add a form to fill in.
Why Edgeworth properties choose Newcastle Gyprocker Heroes
We sheet, set and sand plasterboard across Edgeworth and the rest of the City of Lake Macquarie, on new houses, renovations and repairs. Every job here is priced before it starts, whether it is one damaged wall or a whole house of new work.
How our plastering and gyprocking service works in Edgeworth
Send photographs of a repair, or the floor plans for a new house or renovation, and we price the work from those. A site visit happens where the job needs one, and it costs nothing. Once the quote is accepted we agree a start date that suits your builder's program or your own. Nothing is ordered until that date is set.
On the day we sheet the ceilings first and the walls after, so each wall sheet picks up the ceiling line. We sheet rather than frame, so the studs, ceiling battens and furring channel are set out by your builder or carpenter before we arrive. Clear the room where you can and we work around what has to stay. Walls and ceilings are left set, sanded and ready for the painter, and a repair patch stays visible until it is painted.
Edgeworth sits at the western edge of the urban area, with Cameron Park and Glendale on one side and West Wallsend and Killingworth beyond it. Access is about as easy as this work gets. Almost every job here is at a freestanding house with its own driveway, so nothing has to be carried through a shared entrance. Board goes in at full length rather than being cut down to get around a corner. The thing worth mentioning when you call is the ceiling height and whether the room has a manhole big enough to work through.
Residential plastering in Edgeworth
In the 1870s this was Cocked Hat Creek. In 1885 it became Young Wallsend, and the Young Wallsend Coal Company opened its colliery five years later. The present name arrived only in December 1960, in honour of Sir Tannatt William Edgeworth David. He reached New South Wales in 1882 and mapped the coal seams of the Hunter. In 1886 he found the Greta seam, which opened the South Maitland Coalfields and built a good part of this region. He also led the first ascent of Mount Erebus, and at fifty walked to the South Magnetic Pole with two companions in January 1909. Not many suburbs are named after somebody who did that.
The housing follows the same order. A colliery village core from the 1890s, an interwar and post war belt around it, then substantial later suburban expansion out toward Cameron Park. The core takes relining and crack work, and it is where a wall is least likely to be straight. The post war belt takes extensions, ensuites and ceilings replaced during a re roof. The newer streets take renovation. One thing runs through all of it. Anything here built before 1990 stood a few kilometres from the epicentre of the 1989 earthquake. An unexplained repair history is common and worth asking about.

Frequently asked questions about plastering in Edgeworth
Do you cover the suburbs around Edgeworth?
Yes. Newcastle Gyprocker Heroes covers Edgeworth and the suburbs around it, right across the City of Lake Macquarie. Every neighbouring suburb named on this page is inside the area we work in, and there is no travel charge to any of them. If your street is not shown, call us and say where you are, and we will confirm it on the phone.
What are your service hours in Edgeworth?
Our service hours are Monday to Saturday, 7am to 5.30pm. Newcastle Gyprocker Heroes keeps those hours across Edgeworth and the rest of the City of Lake Macquarie. A call outside them reaches voicemail rather than another number. Leave your suburb and a short description of the work and we will come back to you.
Will heritage or subsidence rules hold up a replaster in Edgeworth?
No, and two things people expect to be in the way are not. There is no heritage conservation area in this postcode, so heritage controls apply only to individually listed properties. Internal alterations to a framed house are also on the mine subsidence exempt list, which covers ceilings and internal partitions. Newcastle Gyprocker Heroes will still tell you if we think something on your job needs a certifier rather than a plasterer.
Can you replace a whole ceiling rather than patch it?
Yes, and in Edgeworth that is the more common of the two. Nine in ten homes here are freestanding, so ceilings run long and a failure usually shows across the whole span rather than in one corner. We take the old lining down, check the batten spacing against the board before ordering, sheet it and set it. The room needs to be clear and the job is noisier and dirtier than a patch, which is worth knowing in advance.
My Edgeworth house backs onto bushland. Does that change the plasterboard?
No, not the plasterboard inside. AS 3959 governs the external side of a house on bush fire prone land. That means the eaves, the soffits and the cladding rather than the lining in your living room. Your Section 10.7 certificate says whether the property is mapped. External linings are not work Newcastle Gyprocker Heroes take on, so that part of a job goes to somebody who does it.
Why does an older Edgeworth wall never come out straight?
Because the oldest part of the suburb is a colliery village from around 1890 and little of it was built plumb. Add a century of settlement and at least one previous relining. A room that measures as a rectangle on paper is not one on site. We work off the wall that is furthest out of true and spread the error across the room. That stops it all collecting in one corner.
