Plastering and Gyprocking in Bateau Bay

Bateau Bay was Boat Harbour before it was Bateau Bay, and bateau is the French word for boat. The change was made official on the thirteenth of August 1937. The other thing worth knowing is what sits along the eastern edge of the suburb. The headland out there was named by the Darkinjung long before any of the rest of it. It has been a national park only since 1991.

Common plasterboard problems in Bateau Bay

Two of the four below are about the park on the eastern boundary. The other two are about who owns the houses, which here is an unusually even split.

The headland was going to be sand mined until 1991

Wyrrabalong did not become a national park until 1991, and the declaration ended a proposal to sand mine the headland. The name is older than that by a long way. The Darkinjung called the headland between here and Forresters Beach Wyrrabalong, and Assistant Surveyor Felton Mathew recorded it in 1831. Bateau Bay Beach picnic area sits inside the park now. So the eastern edge of this suburb is bushland rather than more streets, and it has been settled that way for thirty five years.

Two nations meet at the channel, and the park sits in both

North of the channel at The Entrance is Awabakal Country. South of it, which includes all of Bateau Bay, is Darkinjung Country. Wyrrabalong National Park is split across the two by that same water. None of this changes a quote and we are putting it on the page anyway. A page about a suburb on this edge that never says whose country it stands on has been written off a spreadsheet.

Half this street has finished paying and half is halfway through

The split here is as even as we see anywhere. Thirty six households in a hundred own outright and thirty five are paying off a mortgage. Those two go about a house differently. One tends to do the whole thing at once and the other spreads it over a few years. So the useful question at the quote is what else is planned. It changes where we put a joint and whether a wall gets left ready for the next stage.

Boat Harbour until 1937

The new name was a translation rather than a replacement. Bateau is French for boat and this was Boat Harbour, so the change said the same thing in another language. It was proclaimed a village on the thirteenth of August 1937 by the Minister for Lands, Ernest Buttenshaw. What that tells you is that people were living here before the war. That is not true of the estates a few kilometres inland, and it shows up when a wall comes off.

Why Bateau Bay properties choose Newcastle Gyprocker Heroes

We sheet, set and sand plasterboard across Bateau Bay and the rest of the Central Coast Council area, on new houses, renovations and repairs. Every job here is priced before it starts, whether it is one damaged wall or a whole house of new work.

Call us Monday to Saturday, 7am to 5.30pm, and the person who answers is the one who prices the job. A call outside those hours reaches voicemail.
We supply and deliver the board, the cornice and the compounds, so materials sit inside the price rather than on a separate bill. A repair or a single room is usually finished in one to two days.
We sheet new homes and renovations in Bateau Bay, repair walls and ceilings, run new cornice and line wet areas and patio ceilings. Small shops and offices are covered too, and acoustic or fire rated board is fixed to the specification your builder or certifier hands us.
There is no charge for a quote and no charge for travel anywhere in the Central Coast Council area. New sheeting is priced by the square metre from your plans, and a repair is quoted as one fixed price.
We are licensed and insured, and that holds for every job we quote, domestic or commercial.
This suburb has a national park on one edge and two kinds of owner on every street. We quote for the house rather than for the postcode.

How our plastering and gyprocking service works in Bateau Bay

Send photographs of a repair, or the floor plans for a new house or renovation, and we price the work from those. A site visit happens where the job needs one, and it costs nothing. Once the quote is accepted we agree a start date that suits your builder's program or your own. Nothing is ordered until that date is set.

On the day we sheet the ceilings first and the walls after, so each wall sheet picks up the ceiling line. We sheet rather than frame, so the studs, ceiling battens and furring channel are set out by your builder or carpenter before we arrive. Clear the room where you can and we work around what has to stay. Walls and ceilings are left set, sanded and ready for the painter, and a repair patch stays visible until it is painted.

The suburb runs from the ocean at Bateau Bay Beach back inland toward Tumbi Umbi, with Killarney Vale to the north. Blue Bay, Toowoon Bay and Shelly Beach are the frontages south of it. Four homes in five are freestanding with a driveway, so getting board to a front door is rarely the hard part. The streets against the national park are the ones worth mentioning when you call. There is nothing behind them, so everything has to come in off the front.

Residential plastering in Bateau Bay

Bateau Bay is the settled half of its postcode and it is larger than most people expect. There are more than five thousand homes here and about twelve and a half thousand people. Four in five are freestanding houses. Under a quarter are rented, which is well below the state, and the median age is forty two. What follows from that is ordinary house work rather than anything exotic, in homes that get improved over years instead of all at once.

The name is the older story. The Darkinjung called the headland between here and Forresters Beach Wyrrabalong, understood to mean a headland looking over the sea. Assistant Surveyor Felton Mathew recorded it in 1831. North of the channel at The Entrance is Awabakal Country and south of it is Darkinjung. The suburb itself was Boat Harbour until 1937, when it was proclaimed a village under the French word for the same thing. The national park came last, in 1991.

Frequently asked questions about plastering in Bateau Bay

Do you cover the suburbs around Bateau Bay?

Yes. Newcastle Gyprocker Heroes covers Bateau Bay and the suburbs around it, right across the Central Coast Council area. Every neighbouring suburb named on this page is inside the area we work in, and there is no travel charge to any of them. If your street is not shown, call us and say where you are, and we will confirm it on the phone.

What are your service hours in Bateau Bay?

Our service hours are Monday to Saturday, 7am to 5.30pm. Newcastle Gyprocker Heroes keeps those hours across Bateau Bay and the rest of the Central Coast Council area. A call outside them reaches voicemail rather than another number. Leave your suburb and a short description of the work and we will come back to you.

Why does it matter which side of the channel we are on?

Because the two sides are different country. North of the channel at The Entrance is Awabakal and south of it, which takes in all of Bateau Bay, is Darkinjung. The national park is split across both by that same water. It makes no difference at all to a quote. It makes a difference to getting a page about this suburb right. We looked it up rather than using one name for the whole coast.

Do you work in the streets that back onto the national park?

Yes, and there is nothing extra on the price for it. What we ask is that you say so when you call. A street on the park boundary has no lane behind it, so material comes in off the front and across the block. That is a few minutes of planning rather than a problem. It is much easier sorted out before the truck is loaded than on the morning.

Should I tell you about work I am planning for later?

Yes, and it changes what we do now. Where a wall is coming out in a year, we can set the sheeting out so the later work is simpler. About a third of the households here own outright and about a third are paying off a mortgage. A house improved over several years is normal. Tell us the plan and we will work to it.

Can you tell what is behind my wall from the suburb alone?

No, and anybody who says otherwise is guessing. The census has never recorded the year a house was built, here or anywhere else. What we do know about this place is that it was settled enough to be proclaimed a village in 1937. There is fabric here from before the war that the inland estates do not have. Past that we ask about the house itself.

Ready to get started?

Call and tell us what the wall or ceiling is doing in Bateau Bay, or send the plans for new work and we will price it.
