Plastering and Gyprocking in Singleton
Singleton is the furthest inland we work, roughly eighty kilometres from the sea, and it has the driest afternoons of anywhere on our list. One in five working people in this town is employed in coal mining. The old part of it sits on a floodplain behind a levee nearly three kilometres long. Those three facts between them account for most of what makes a job here different, and none of them apply on the coast.
Common plasterboard problems in Singleton
Dry air, shift rosters and a river have shaped this town, and they shape the work in it. Timber is where the list starts here, which is not where it starts anywhere else.
Out here a frame can look dry and not be dry
Afternoon air in Singleton runs far drier than anywhere nearer the coast, and summer days above thirty five degrees are common rather than notable. What that does to timber is dry the outside of it while the middle stays wet. So the surface tells you less here than it does anywhere else we work. A frame that feels right can still be carrying enough moisture to move a wall after it is lined. We take a reading instead of taking a look, and it costs nothing.
In this town the roster decides when we start, not us
One in five employed people here works in coal mining, against well under one in a hundred nationally. That means night shifts, and it means blocks of days away from the house. Neither is a complication once somebody says so. If you are sleeping days we do not open a ceiling above your bed at eight in the morning. If the house is empty for a week, that is the best run at a job anybody gets. We would rather use it than work around you.
A levee nearly three kilometres long, and two floods people still discuss
The older part of Singleton sits on the floodplain of the Hunter behind that levee. The town has been through two serious events in living memory, in 1955 and again in June 2007. More than three hundred millimetres fell inside a day that second time. So re sheeting after water is ordinary work here rather than a once in a lifetime job. Whether a particular lot sits inside the levee is a question for Council rather than for us. It is worth asking before you need the answer.
Half the people we quote for build things for a living
A trade certificate is the most common qualification in this town, and it changes the conversation rather than the price. People here read a quote properly, know what a level of finish means, and can tell whether a wall was set or filled. That suits us. So the quote says which finish, what is included and what is not, and where the line sits between our work and somebody else's. Nobody here needs a number with nothing behind it.
Why Singleton properties choose Newcastle Gyprocker Heroes
We sheet, set and sand plasterboard across Singleton and the rest of the Singleton Council area, on new houses, renovations and repairs. Every job here is priced before it starts, whether it is one damaged wall or a whole house of new work.
How our plastering and gyprocking service works in Singleton
Send photographs of a repair, or the floor plans for a new house or renovation, and we price the work from those. A site visit happens where the job needs one, and it costs nothing. Once the quote is accepted we agree a start date that suits your builder's program or your own. Nothing is ordered until that date is set.
On the day we sheet the ceilings first and the walls after, so each wall sheet picks up the ceiling line. We sheet rather than frame, so the studs, ceiling battens and furring channel are set out by your builder or carpenter before we arrive. Clear the room where you can and we work around what has to stay. Walls and ceilings are left set, sanded and ready for the painter, and a repair patch stays visible until it is painted.
Singleton sits on the Hunter about eighty kilometres inland, with Mount Thorley and Broke to the south west and Jerrys Plains beyond them. Most of the town is detached housing and the older core near the river has the narrower frontages. Distance is not charged for out here and it does not need discussing. Two things are worth telling us. The roster, if somebody in the house is on one, and the month, because summer decides both the hours and the drying.
Residential plastering in Singleton
The town began as a private venture on the riverbank. Benjamin Singleton came through on his own expedition in 1818, held land here by 1821 and was made district constable in 1823. He and his wife Mary ran an inn called the Barley Mow and opened a mill on the river in 1829. In 1836 he bought a hundred adjoining acres and advertised the allotments in the Sydney Gazette on the second of January. The town was proclaimed that same year. It had been called St Patrick's Plain since 1820.
What has been built since falls into three groups. The 1830s river core on the floodplain. Victorian and Federation streets around it. Then a large post war and modern spread driven by the mining workforce. Coal is the main employer and the army is the other. Lone Pine Barracks was established south of the town in 1940, and the Infantry Museum is here as well. So this is a working town with money in it, a young median age and a high share of households paying off a house. The work reflects that.

Frequently asked questions about plastering in Singleton
Do you cover the suburbs around Singleton?
Yes. Newcastle Gyprocker Heroes covers Singleton and the suburbs around it, right across the Singleton Council area. Every neighbouring suburb named on this page is inside the area we work in, and there is no travel charge to any of them. If your street is not shown, call us and say where you are, and we will confirm it on the phone.
What are your service hours in Singleton?
Our service hours are Monday to Saturday, 7am to 5.30pm. Newcastle Gyprocker Heroes keeps those hours across Singleton and the rest of the Singleton Council area. A call outside them reaches voicemail rather than another number. Leave your suburb and a short description of the work and we will come back to you.
Do you schedule work around mine rosters?
Yes, and it is one of the more useful things we do in this town. A day sleeper does not want a ceiling coming down overhead mid morning, and there is no reason for it to happen. Tell us the roster when you call and the noisy stages get planned around it. If the house is empty for a block of days, say that too. An empty house is the cleanest run at a job we ever get.
How do I find out whether the levee protects my street?
Nobody can tell you that from a street name, and we would not try. The levee runs nearly three kilometres and protects the older floodplain part of town. Which individual lots sit inside it is a per property question. Council holds the flood information and your planning certificate carries the answer for your own address. It is worth having in hand before work starts rather than after water has been through.
Why do you meter the framing before lining a room?
Because in this climate looking at it is not enough. The afternoons here are the driest anywhere we work. Dry air takes the surface of a piece of timber well before it takes the core. Timber that feels ready can still move once a wall is closed over it, which shows as cracked joints a season later. A reading takes a minute, costs nothing and settles it. We would rather know than guess.
What is the most common job you get called to in Singleton?
Ceilings, and after that walls that have had water through them. The town has a floodplain core and a long history with the river, so re sheeting after damage is ordinary work here. The rest is extensions and additions on houses being paid off by people working full time. Photographs of whatever you want priced will usually get you a number without a visit.
