Plastering and Gyprocking in Cardiff

Cardiff had three names before it had a railway station, and the ground under it has moved twice for reasons worth knowing about. We sheet, set and repair plasterboard across Cardiff, Cardiff South, Glendale, Macquarie Hills and Cameron Park. The houses in those five were built decades apart, and the oldest of them have a history the newest do not share.

Common plasterboard problems in Cardiff

Most of the work here is the extension, the conversion and the second bathroom that a growing family gets to eventually. The rest is cracking, and cracking in this postcode has more than one explanation. Five recur here, and they sort into ground and age.

Every house here built before 1990 sat directly above the epicentre

The epicentre of the 28 December 1989 earthquake was near Boolaroo, roughly 14 kilometres west south west of the Newcastle CBD. The focal depth was about 11.5 kilometres. Boolaroo adjoins Cardiff. It was magnitude 5.6, and around 50,000 buildings were damaged with about 300 demolished. A house here from before that summer took the event at its closest point. Where a wall has been patched more than once with no explanation anybody remembers, that history is worth establishing before we patch it again.

There are two explanations for a Cardiff crack and neither is the plaster

Lymington colliery opened in 1882 and South Wallsend colliery in 1884, both near what is now Cardiff South. This whole postcode falls inside a mine subsidence district. So the ground is one answer and the 1989 event is the other, and they leave similar marks. Telling them apart matters, because one of them is finished and the other is not. Status for a single address comes off the NSW Planning Portal. It is worth having in hand before a quote.

Cameron Park does not need the checks Cardiff South does

Cameron Park was rezoned in 1998 and built from the early 2000s, and by 2021 it held more people than Cardiff or Edgeworth. Cardiff, Cardiff South and Glendale are decades older. That is one postcode with a forty year gap in it. An older house is opened carefully because of what might be behind the lining. A Cameron Park house is not. We will not put a line on your quote for a check the building is too new to need.

A garage conversion is the most common job here and the least like a room

It is the cheapest way to get a fourth bedroom or a rumpus, and it is almost never a straightforward sheeting job. The walls are usually single skin with nothing behind them to fix to, so a frame has to exist before board can go on. The slab has never been lined and the floor level rarely matches the house. The ceiling sits under a roof space that was built to cover a car. We tell you which of those apply from photographs before anybody talks about a price.

A new extension never meets an old wall flat on the first coat

Cardiff grew as a railway town, and 127 acres were bought in November 1925 for the locomotive workshops between here and Cockle Creek. The worker housing that followed has mostly been added to at least once since. New board is dead flat. A wall that has stood for sixty years and been repaired twice is not, and the join between them is where the eye goes. We set that junction wider than the joint needs so the plane runs through rather than stepping at the line.

Why Cardiff properties choose Newcastle Gyprocker Heroes

We sheet, set and sand plasterboard across Cardiff and the rest of the City of Lake Macquarie, on new houses, renovations and repairs. Every job here is priced before it starts, whether it is one damaged wall or a whole house of new work.

Call us Monday to Saturday, 7am to 5.30pm, and the person who answers is the one who prices the job. A call outside those hours reaches voicemail.
We supply and deliver the board, the cornice and the compounds, so materials sit inside the price rather than on a separate bill. A repair or a single room is usually finished in one to two days.
We sheet new homes and renovations in Cardiff, repair walls and ceilings, run new cornice and line wet areas and patio ceilings. Small shops and offices are covered too, and acoustic or fire rated board is fixed to the specification your builder or certifier hands us.
There is no charge for a quote and no charge for travel anywhere in the City of Lake Macquarie. New sheeting is priced by the square metre from your plans, and a repair is quoted as one fixed price.
We are licensed and insured, and that holds for every job we quote, domestic or commercial.
We work the whole of 2285. A crack here gets read against two histories: the collieries from the 1880s, and the 1989 earthquake that started next door.

How our plastering and gyprocking service works in Cardiff

Send photographs of a repair, or the floor plans for a new house or renovation, and we price the work from those. A site visit happens where the job needs one, and it costs nothing. Once the quote is accepted we agree a start date that suits your builder's program or your own. Nothing is ordered until that date is set.

On the day we sheet the ceilings first and the walls after, so each wall sheet picks up the ceiling line. We sheet rather than frame, so the studs, ceiling battens and furring channel are set out by your builder or carpenter before we arrive. Clear the room where you can and we work around what has to stay. Walls and ceilings are left set, sanded and ready for the painter, and a repair patch stays visible until it is painted.

Main Road runs through Glendale and the Main North line runs through the middle of the postcode. Between them they set how we reach most of this work. Access itself is rarely the problem. Close to nine in ten dwellings are separate houses on suburban streets with a driveway and side access. A six metre sheet can be walked in whole at most addresses here. Tell us early if the room is upstairs in a Cardiff Heights or Macquarie Hills house. A stair turn limits board length as firmly as anything else does.

Residential plastering in Cardiff

The suburb was Winding Creek first, after the stream that runs south east to north west across the central valley. Then it was Lymington, after one of the mines. Cardiff was chosen after the Welsh capital to end the confusion with Flemington and was officially adopted in 1889. Railway construction had begun in 1883, with a navvies camp at Winding Creek that year, and the line was finished in 1887. So the shape of the place is a mining and railway village core from the 1880s and 1890s. A Federation and interwar ring sits around that, then a heavy post war expansion, then modern infill on top of all three.

What that produces is a suburb of houses that are still being changed. The core takes repair work and relining. The post war belt takes the fourth bedroom, the second living area, the ensuite and the garage conversion. That last one is the job we quote most often in this postcode. The newer estates out at Cameron Park take renovation rather than repair, because nothing there is old enough to have failed yet. Glendale and Macquarie Hills sit between the two and take a mix. The one thing common to all of them is that the new work has to meet the old work somewhere.

Frequently asked questions about plastering in Cardiff

Do you cover the suburbs around Cardiff?

Yes. Newcastle Gyprocker Heroes covers Cardiff and the suburbs around it, right across the City of Lake Macquarie. Every neighbouring suburb named on this page is inside the area we work in, and there is no travel charge to any of them. If your street is not shown, call us and say where you are, and we will confirm it on the phone.

What are your service hours in Cardiff?

Our service hours are Monday to Saturday, 7am to 5.30pm. Newcastle Gyprocker Heroes keeps those hours across Cardiff and the rest of the City of Lake Macquarie. A call outside them reaches voicemail rather than another number. Leave your suburb and a short description of the work and we will come back to you.

Could the 1989 earthquake still be cracking my Cardiff wall?

It can still explain one. The epicentre was near Boolaroo, next door, at a depth of about 11.5 kilometres, and around 50,000 buildings were damaged. A house from before 1990 took that at close range, and repairs made in the years afterwards were not always taken back to sound framing. Newcastle Gyprocker Heroes ask what the house has already had done before quoting a crack, because the answer changes whether a patch will hold.

Does the mining under Cardiff change how you quote a crack?

Yes, it changes how we read one. The whole of 2285 sits inside a mine subsidence district, and the collieries here were working from 1882. That gives a recurring crack a second possible cause alongside the 1989 earthquake, and the two leave similar marks. We look at photographs before pricing a patch here. A crack that is still moving will take the patch with it.

Do you sheet garage conversions in Cardiff?

Yes, and it is the job we are asked for most here. What we need to know first is whether there is a frame to fix to. A single skin garage wall has nothing behind it until one is built. We sheet rather than frame, so that part belongs to your builder or carpenter. Send photographs of all four walls and the ceiling, and we will tell you what the room needs.

My house is in Cameron Park. Is it different to a job in Cardiff?

Yes, and mostly in what it does not need. Cameron Park was rezoned in 1998 and built from the early 2000s. The framing is modern, the linings are original, and there is nothing behind them that needs careful handling. Newcastle Gyprocker Heroes quote it as renovation work rather than repair work. No allowance goes on for a house of that age.
